A teacher’s aspiration starts from passing the board exam to being hired in a private institution. He/she continues dreaming, from filling minds to touching hearts. Many aim to teach in a public school, where they believe they can fully serve their purpose and be shaped well too along with fulfilling their mission. However, the path towards this goal is not an easy one. Being an aspirant requires you to go through a certain process for you to be qualified. This process includes the challenging phase of Teaching Demonstration which should be undergone successfully.

As a teacher applicant, you should be able to prepare everything beforehand so you could be able to demonstrate well. Keep in mind that this is a very important part of your application in the DepEd since it is given with 15 points for Elementary and Junior High School, and 20 points for Senior High School.

Here are some simple tips/suggestions for the preparation and actual teaching demonstration. Note that these are only guides. The best preparation is the one which is a fruit of hard work and patience. The best teaching demonstration is the one performed with passion and devotion to the profession.

Teaching Demonstration Steps and Tips

Preparation:

  1. Think of a topic that interests you the most.

Yes, confidence is a must. However, do not simply consider a topic which you think you are good at. It is very important that the topic you chose gives you a feeling of excitement too, something that makes you happy and look forward for the best. This will make you interested all throughout the preparation until the end of the demonstration.

  1. Decide for a grade level.

Since the present curriculum offers spiral approach in teaching, topics are alike; they only differ in complexity. Choose what grade level corresponds to the preferred content of your selected topic.

  1. Set your goals.

Visualize what you want to happen in the teaching-learning process. Based from this, you can start having your goals/ objectives of the lesson. What are your expectations?

Imagine how you want to start your class. What routines are you going to apply? How will you motivate the students? What will be the flow of your discussion? How will the students respond – through recitation, board work, or activity? How should you end the class?

  1. Plan your lesson. / Start preparing lesson plan.

This is the process where you will put down into writing all the things that you have visualized and set. If you have done step no. 3, this will be easy for you. Some teachers fail in lesson planning because they do not have clear visions and goals. Thus, bear in mind that coming up with a well-written/planned lesson depends on you as a teacher, you are the master and the captain as they say.

You can also change what you have set here if you happen to think of a better idea; this is a plan anyway. However, you should have finalized this before starting with the preparation of materials.

  1. Prepare instructional materials.

Use your lesson plan as a guide in preparing the materials you need for your instruction. We’re on the 21st century. Prepare something with the use of technology, but it doesn’t mean that you will no longer use your creativity in preparing other materials aside from PowerPoint presentations, slides, etc. In short, you can use the traditional and the modern instructional materials at the same time. In doing so, it is the students that you have to consider. What resources are more effective for them to learn?

In the end, the best instructional material is YOU as the teacher. No matter how creative you are with the materials you prepared, these are just aids, they do not have to replace you.

Note: It is more advisable to prepare a Plan B.

  1. Master your lesson.

Since you are the most important in your instruction, it is a must for you to be knowledgeable in every aspect of your topic/lesson. This is your greatest weapon when things fail to happen according to your expectations. Moreover, it is an asset for a teacher to not to hold any cue or index card in delivering the instruction. The key to do this is the word MASTERY.

  1. Prepare yourself.
  • Pray. Do not forget that this is the best solution to every problem. Asking His presence all the time will make you feel safe. Also, do not forget to do this whether you succeeded or not.
  • Motivate yourself. Do not lose your interest in the process. Self-motivation is of great importance in every stage of your application process.
  • Be creative. Be resourceful not only in the preparation of instructional materials, but also in thinking of possible strategies that you may employ. A teacher who has a range of teaching strategies in his/her mind effectively engages the students in the teaching-learning process.

Actual Demonstration:

  1. Motivate yourself. Think positive.

Believe that you can do it, and surely you can. There should be no room for negativities, it will not help you in any way. You will only do this once so you should do your best.

  1. Be confident, but not too confident.

“You cannot teach what you do not know. You cannot give what you do not have.” Do not try to impress, you will only exaggerate things; simply do your best.

  1. Focus on the important parts of the lesson.

Perhaps you will be given a few minutes (15-30 minutes) only and you cannot do all that you’re supposed to do. This will require you to deliver the “highlights” or gist of your demonstration. Other routines (checking of attendance, etc.), parts of the lesson (e.g. games/quiz which will require too much time), and/or activities (e.g. giving too much examples) could just be assumed to have done.

In this situation, you can use your mastery in the subject matter as an advantage for there should be no “dead air” once you have started in front of the class. Every second is essential!

  1. Be passionate!

Not considering teaching as your first love is not an alibi or excuse; you chose it, you should have learned to love it! This is the reason why self-motivation has been reiterated. Showing passion is a very difficult task on your part as a teacher, so at least try to practice having it. How?

  • Genuinely smile. Brighten up the learning environment. Do not frown and get angry if it is not needed, this is not the only way to gain students’ respect.
  • Show enthusiasm. This could be reflected by the eagerness in your voice, the gracefulness in your gestures, and the truthfulness in your smile.
  • Be excited! Feeling nervousness is normal, but feeling too much of it is already strange. Along with feeling nervous, you should also feel the excitement. When you are excited of what you are doing, surely you are enjoying it too. This is a great sign that you will succeed in the demonstration.
  • Love what you do! This is the bottom line of all these tips. And the main source of these all is YOU yourself. Help yourself, start with yourself; no one can help you regarding this matter except you. If you find love in the profession, you will never give up.
  1. Breathe.

Whether you think you succeeded or not…breathe, cheer up, smile! Congratulate yourself for a job well done. Remember that doing your best is more important than being the best. Lastly, do not forget to thank Him too.
